Senior PHP Developer

About the role

We are looking for a Senior PHP Developer to join our internal technology team in Basingstoke. The role is hybrid, with one day on‑site per week, and involves working within an Agile Scrum environment to enhance our business‑critical CRM platform.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend systems using PHP frameworks such as Laravel, CakePHP and Symfony.
• Deliver features end‑to‑end, from design and development through testing and deployment.
• Modernise legacy CakePHP applications and build robust APIs and integrations.
• Write clean, maintainable and testable code while contributing to code reviews and CI/CD pipelines.
• Support architecture decisions, reduce technical debt and troubleshoot production issues.
• Mentor junior developers through knowledge sharing and coaching.
• Collaborate closely with Product Owners, QA, DevOps and other technology teams.

Required profile

• 5+ years of commercial PHP development experience.
• A‑Level or equivalent qualification.
• Experience working in regulated sectors such as insurance or financial services is a plus.

Required skills

• PHP 7.4 and PHP 8+, Laravel, CakePHP, Symfony.
• RESTful API design and implementation.
• MySQL with query optimisation and performance tuning.
• JavaScript (ES6+), HTML5, CSS.
• Git, Docker and Linux/WSL environments.
• Unit testing, automated testing and code review practices.
• Agile/Scrum methodology.
• Familiarity with Vue.js/Nuxt, Azure, CI/CD pipelines, messaging technologies, microservices or event‑driven architectures (desirable).
