Senior Scientist – Analytical Instrumentation Design & Spectrometry

About the role

A Senior Scientist opportunity has arisen within the innovation function of an established detection technology business. This research‑led role covers the earliest stages of the product lifecycle, from concept and feasibility through to proof of concept and new technology evaluation.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build experimental equipment for detection technologies.
• Plan, execute and analyse original research projects from concept to proof of concept.
• Critically evaluate data to inform product and technology development.
• Provide technical guidance to engineering and product teams and lead technical discussions.
• Supervise and mentor other scientists, identify external collaboration opportunities and support off‑site trials.

Required profile

• PhD in chemistry or physics (or a relevant master’s degree with commercial experience).
• Industry laboratory experience in analytical chemistry, detection or forensics.
• Hands‑on experience designing and developing analytical instrumentation, preferably in spectrometry.
• Proven ability to design experiments independently, interpret complex data and propose original research directions.
• Strong communication skills with confidence to lead discussions and present findings to scientific and senior stakeholders.
