Senior Site Reliability Engineer - Python

About the role

The Department for Business and Trade, in partnership with Inspire People, is looking for a Senior Site Reliability Engineer with strong Python development skills. You will help design, build and operate reliable, scalable and secure cloud services that support critical government and business functions across the UK.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain shared service products that improve developer efficiency.
• Write clean, maintainable and well‑tested Python code for platform and tooling development.
• Collaborate with development teams to enhance monitoring, logging, metrics, dashboards and CI/CD pipelines.
• Design, provision and optimise secure, scalable cloud infrastructure using infrastructure‑as‑code.
• Guide teams in adopting SRE practices such as SLIs, SLOs and error budgets.
• Contribute to observability initiatives to improve performance insight and user impact.
• Develop and refine CI/CD pipelines for safe, frequent and low‑risk releases.
• Work with product, delivery and architecture colleagues to align platform services with business goals.

Required profile

• Senior‑level experience in software engineering and site reliability engineering.
• Proficiency in Python development or a strong desire to develop Python expertise.
• Hands‑on experience building and operating applications on cloud platforms.
• Deep understanding of modern cloud engineering environments and automation.
• Passion for continuous improvement and delivering high‑quality, reliable services.
