Senior Software Engineer – Search & AI Platform

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join Elsevier’s Search and AI Platform team. You will help build and enhance graph‑based search services that power products such as LeapSpace, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Clinical Key, and Reaxys. The role focuses on delivering scalable, high‑performance backend solutions that enable advanced discovery and recommendation for the scientific community.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement graph‑based search services using Java and Spring Boot.
• Develop APIs with GraphQL, GraphQL Federation, and REST.
• Integrate with AWS services (Neo4j, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, Parameter Store, SQS, SNS, Kinesis) and Kubernetes (EKS) for ingestion, storage, and messaging pipelines.
• Champion clean code, SOLID principles, and engineering best practices; mentor junior engineers.
• Collaborate with product managers and cross‑functional teams to deliver advanced search and recommendation features.
• Ensure robust monitoring and logging using New Relic and Coralogix.

Required profile

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience in distributed systems or search platforms.
• Proven track record building scalable backend systems and APIs.
• Strong expertise in Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem.
• Hands‑on experience with GraphQL API design.
• Solid background in cloud‑native architectures with AWS and Kubernetes (EKS).
• Familiarity with Agile or Kanban development methodologies.
