Senior Software Engineer – Search and AI Platform

About the role

Join Elsevier’s Search and AI Platform team to build high‑performance, data‑driven services that power products such as LeapSpace, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. You will work on graph‑based search and recommendation systems that accelerate scientific discovery.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement graph‑based search services.
• Develop backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, Spring, GraphQL and GraphQL Federation.
• Integrate with AWS services and databases (Neo4j, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, Parameter Store, SQS, SNS, Kinesis) for ingestion, storage, and messaging pipelines.
• Champion clean code, SOLID principles, and engineering best practices; mentor junior engineers.
• Collaborate with product managers and cross‑functional teams to deliver advanced search and recommendation features.
• Ensure robust monitoring and logging with New Relic and Coralogix.

Required profile

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience in distributed systems or search platforms.
• Proven track record building scalable backend systems and APIs.
• Strong expertise in Java and the Spring Boot ecosystem.
• Hands‑on experience designing GraphQL and REST APIs.
• Solid background in cloud‑native architectures with AWS and Kubernetes (EKS).
• Advocate of best practices (SOLID, clean code, architectural patterns, CI/CD).
• Familiarity with Agile or Kanban development methodologies.
• Inclusive, collaborative mindset and willingness to learn new technologies.
