Shielding Engineer – Nuclear Micro‑Reactor

About the role

Cambridge Atomworks is developing the ODIN nuclear micro‑reactor and seeks a proactive Shielding Engineer to design and optimise radiation shielding for this compact system. You will work within a fast‑moving startup environment, collaborating with physicists, engineers and safety specialists to ensure the reactor meets performance and regulatory requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Design cost‑effective shielding solutions tailored to the ODIN micro‑reactor.
• Assess radiation damage, detector sensitivities and perform dose assessments for the reactor and related sources such as transport flasks.
• Evaluate shielding performance using deterministic and Monte Carlo methods.
• Develop and implement validation and verification strategies for shielding designs.
• Produce clear documentation supporting design and performance assessments.
• Review shielding work of peers to maintain high quality standards.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements.
• Communicate challenges and solutions to internal teams, regulators and potential customers.

Required profile

• 2:1 or above Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics or a related discipline.
• Familiarity with shielding codes and methods.
• Strong understanding of radiation shielding physics (neutron and gamma attenuation).
• Ability to work effectively in a cross‑disciplinary team.
• Clear and persuasive communication with strong documentation skills.
