Shift Control Room Operator

About the role

The Shift Control Room Operator works within Thames Water's Wastewater Control team, acting as the first line of defence against operational issues across a large wastewater network. Based at the Reading control centre, you will monitor alarms, coordinate urgent responses and help protect customers from flooding while safeguarding the environment.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor alarms and system data from pumping stations, sewer networks and treatment works using SCADA tools.
• Coordinate rapid field responses to prevent flooding and environmental incidents.
• Log decisions, actions and safety updates accurately for shift handover.
• Escalate high‑risk incidents to senior teams and managers.
• Support colleagues during high‑workload periods and ensure smooth shift transitions.
• Apply safety systems and emergency protocols to protect field staff.

Required profile

• Experience with SCADA systems and knowledge of pumping stations or wastewater treatment works.
• Proactive, methodical approach to handling high volumes of work.
• Strong analytical ability and good numeracy.
• Ability to work under pressure and make quick, sound decisions.
• Competence with IT systems and Microsoft Office.
• Full UK driving licence (desirable).
