Sister/Charge Nurse – Emergency Department (12‑month secondment)

About the role

The Emergency Department at University Hospital Southampton is seeking experienced Sister/Charge Nurses to lead a multidisciplinary team in a fast‑paced, major trauma centre. The position is offered on a 12‑month secondment with the possibility of permanent employment for internal applicants.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations of the Emergency Department, ensuring high‑quality, patient‑centred care.
• Coordinate care for major trauma, minor injuries and patients in mental health crisis.
• Support and mentor junior staff, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
• Maintain clinical standards, safety protocols and departmental documentation.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and departmental audits.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with Band 6 (B6) qualification.
• Demonstrated leadership experience in an emergency or acute care setting.
• Strong communication and decision‑making abilities.
• Commitment to diversity, inclusion and anti‑discriminatory practice.
