Sister/Charge Nurse – Emergency Department (12‑month secondment)

About the role

The Emergency Department at University Hospital Southampton is seeking experienced Sister/Charge Nurses to lead clinical teams in a fast‑paced, major trauma centre. This position is offered on a 12‑month secondment with the possibility of a permanent appointment, providing a supportive environment for professional growth.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee day‑to‑day operations of the Emergency Department, ensuring safe, patient‑centred care.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams during major trauma, mental health crises, and minor injury presentations.
• Act as a clinical role model, mentoring junior staff and promoting best practice.
• Maintain accurate documentation and compliance with NHS standards.
• Participate in departmental audits, quality improvement initiatives, and emergency drills.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with Band 6 (B6) status.
• Demonstrated experience in emergency or acute care settings.
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
• Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
