Skilled Highways Operative

About the role

Join the highways team in Hexham and help keep Northumberland’s road network safe and functional. You will work either as a team leader or a team member, carrying out a variety of repairs and maintenance tasks on public highways.

Key responsibilities

• Perform modular and block paving works.
• Lay in‑situ concrete and install associated steel reinforcement.
• Carry out iron‑work such as fitting manholes, gullies and valve cases.
• Lay kerb and channel systems.
• Install and repair drainage pipes and operate mechanical jetting equipment.
• Fit formwork and shoring‑up equipment.
• Install metal concrete bollards and undertake excavation work.

Required profile

• Valid driving licence.
• Previous experience in highways and construction.
• NVQ Level 2 or equivalent qualification.
• Ability to interpret detailed spoken and written instructions, plans, drawings and schedules.
• Capability to calculate work requirements, keep accurate records and organise resources and staff, including own time.
