Software Engineer II – Payments Platform

About the role

American Express is looking for a Software Engineer II to join its payment network team in the UK. You will help design, develop and maintain high‑performance, low‑latency services that power card transactions, mobile payments and e‑commerce experiences.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test and deploy secure backend services for the core payment platform and customer‑facing applications.
• Maintain and improve existing codebases, perform debugging and root‑cause analysis.
• Automate deployments and support monitoring across test, integration and production environments.
• Scale applications based on demand forecasts and ensure high availability.
• Participate in code reviews, quality reviews and documentation of software components.

Required profile

• Professional experience in software development using Java (11 or higher) and distributed enterprise frameworks.
• Ability to work with code versioning (Git) and build tools (Maven or Gradle).
• Experience with automated testing, test‑driven development and unit testing frameworks.
• Eligibility to work in the United Kingdom without visa sponsorship.
