Sous Chef – Bank (Watford)

About the role

Avery Healthcare is seeking a warm, enthusiastic Sous Chef – Bank to join the culinary team at Elton House Care Home in Watford. You will support the Head Chef in delivering nutritious, high‑quality meals that enhance residents' wellbeing.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Head Chef in managing the kitchen and supervising staff.
• Prepare modified diets that are appealing, balanced and compliant with IDDSI guidelines.
• Ensure all food preparation meets the highest hygiene and safety standards.
• Support the team in understanding and applying Avery’s Food Safety Management System.
• Maintain budgetary control while delivering a comprehensive culinary service.

Required profile

• Relevant catering qualification – City & Guilds 706/1 and 706/2, NVQ or equivalent.
• Minimum of 1 year catering experience, preferably in a care‑home or similar setting.
• Demonstrated compassion and commitment to high‑quality resident care.
• Flexibility to cover a range of responsibilities at short notice.

Required skills

• Food safety and hygiene knowledge.
• Experience with IDDSI dietary guidelines.
• Ability to prepare modified and nutritionally balanced meals.
