Sous Chef - Live In

About the role

We are looking for a motivated Sous Chef to join our live‑in team at The Waterhead Inn in Ambleside, Lake District. Working closely with the Head Chef, you will help deliver high‑quality dishes using fresh, seasonal ingredients while supporting menu development and maintaining our high culinary standards.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Head Chef in daily kitchen operations and ensure consistency across all dishes.
• Lead and motivate a talented kitchen team, stepping in to manage the team in the Head Chef’s absence.
• Contribute to menu creation, recipe development and food costing.
• Control stock levels, place orders with approved suppliers and manage inventory.
• Maintain strict hygiene and health‑and‑safety standards throughout the kitchen.
• Oversee kitchen cleanliness and ensure all equipment is well maintained.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a fast‑paced kitchen environment.
• Ability to work calmly under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with front‑of‑house and management.
• Passion for food, creativity and a commitment to delivering excellence.
• Reliability for a live‑in role and willingness to work flexible hours.
