Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Microbiology

About the role

Join a close‑knit Microbiology team delivering essential diagnostic services to two hospitals and the local GP community. You will work at Synlab’s Basildon hub, using state‑of‑the‑art BD Kiestra Synapsys technology and a range of manual and automated techniques.

Key responsibilities

• Perform and interpret routine and specialist biomedical investigations.
• Provide professional leadership to trainee BMS, associate practitioners, laboratory technicians and MLAs.
• Offer technical advice to clinicians on test appropriateness and turnaround times.
• Rotate through all Microbiology areas, including Automation Laboratory (Kiestra TLA, MRSA, urogenital), Manual Bacteriology (CL3, Mycology, waste management), NAATs, urinalysis and serology.

Required profile

• HCPC registration with at least 2 years post‑registration experience.
• Specialist portfolio or equivalent in Microbiology (or nearing completion).
• Ability to work across three sites in a 24/7 environment.
• High accuracy, strong numeracy, interpretive and problem‑solving skills.
• Proficiency with laboratory information management systems and standard office software.

Required skills

• BD Kiestra Synapsys automation platform.
• Manual bacteriology techniques (CL3, Mycology, waste management).
• NAATs and urinalysis methods.
• Serology and molecular biology platforms.
• LIMS and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) plus statistical packages.
