Specialist Doctor in Acute Medicine

About the role

This position offers an exciting opportunity to join the Acute Medicine service at Wirral University Teaching Hospital. The Specialist Doctor will provide senior clinical input for acutely unwell adult patients presenting via the Emergency Department and primary care.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver senior assessment, diagnosis and management of acute medical admissions across the Acute Medicine Unit (AMU) and Urgent Medical Assessment Centre (UMAC/SDEC).
• Support consultant‑led ward rounds, acute admissions, Same Day Emergency Care and ambulatory pathways.
• Provide timely senior decision‑making to facilitate patient flow, safe discharge and escalation of care.
• Supervise and support resident doctors and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
• Participate in teaching, clinical governance, audit and quality‑improvement activities.
• Contribute to service development and weekend/evening rota commitments as required.

Required profile

• Qualified medical doctor with experience in acute adult medicine.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with consultants, nursing teams and multidisciplinary colleagues.
• Commitment to teaching, supervision and continuous professional development.
• Willingness to engage in clinical governance and service transformation initiatives.
