Specialty Doctor – Acute Medicine & Same Day Emergency Care

About the role

You will join the Acute Medical and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) teams at Royal Oldham Hospital, working across a hybrid split between acute medicine and SDEC. The position involves direct patient care, clinical decision‑making and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and manage acute admissions on the Acute Medical Unit, including daily patient reviews and initiating treatment plans.
• Perform procedures under supervision and manage patients requiring non‑invasive ventilation (CPAP).
• Screen, accept and triage referrals from A&E, GPs and community services for the SDEC pathway.
• Conduct clinical assessments, order investigations, devise management plans and arrange safe discharge or onward referral.
• Coordinate care with Advanced Care Practitioners, Physician Associates, senior nurses and provide advice to other practitioners outside normal hours.
• Collaborate with specialist colleagues in gastroenterology, cardiology, rheumatology, neurology and elderly medicine as needed.

Required profile

• Qualified medical doctor with experience in acute medicine and emergency care.
• Senior clinical decision‑maker able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Willingness to engage in both acute medicine and SDEC activities without mandatory on‑call duties.
• Strong communication skills for multidisciplinary collaboration.

Required skills

• Non‑invasive ventilation (CPAP) proficiency.
• Procedural skills relevant to acute medical care (under supervision where required).
