Specialty Registrar in Emergency Medicine

About the role

The Specialty Registrar (ST3+) in Emergency Medicine is a senior 24/7 clinical decision‑maker who leads high‑acuity patient care, resuscitations and departmental flow across the Liverpool NHS hospitals.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct rapid assessments of complex, undifferentiated patients arriving via ambulance, GP referral or self‑presentation.
• Act as the primary senior decision‑maker out of hours, independently managing the department when consultants are off‑site.
• Lead major medical and trauma resuscitation teams, coordinating time‑critical interventions.
• Formulate working diagnoses, order and interpret investigations, and implement definitive management plans under pressure.
• Manage patient throughput, prioritising safety and making admission, transfer or discharge decisions.
• Perform and supervise advanced procedures, including point‑of‑care ultrasound (POCUS).
• Liaise with inpatient specialties to secure rapid patient pathways.
• Provide direct supervision, coaching and pastoral support to junior doctors, ANPs, ENPs, PAs and medical students.
• Participate in audits, quality‑improvement projects and mortality & morbidity reviews to drive clinical governance.
• Escalate exceptionally complex cases to the on‑call consultant or shift controller.

Required profile

• ST3+ level training in Emergency Medicine with full GMC registration.
• Proven ability to make autonomous clinical decisions in a high‑pressure environment.
• Strong leadership and communication skills for overnight and resuscitation leadership.
• Experience supervising junior staff and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
• Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement and clinical governance.

Required skills

• Point‑of‑care ultrasound (POCUS) proficiency.
