Speech & Language Therapy Assistant

About the role

The Speech & Language Therapy Assistant will support learners with communication differences, working under the guidance of a qualified Speech and Language Therapist. You will help implement therapy recommendations across the college and partner sites, ensuring each learner’s needs are met within a neurodiversity‑affirming framework.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver therapy‑based support to students with autism, learning disabilities and complex needs.
• Liaise with teaching staff, families and carers to integrate recommendations into daily routines.
• Monitor and record progress against therapeutic plans and contribute to EHCP reviews.
• Provide advice, training and resources to staff regarding communication strategies.
• Travel between Merton College and other South Thames Colleges Group sites as required.

Required profile

• Recent experience working with a caseload of young adults with diverse communication needs.
• Ability to translate therapy recommendations into practical classroom support.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills at all organisational levels.
• Accurate record‑keeping and ability to meet strict deadlines.

Required skills

• Knowledge of speech and language therapy techniques and assessment feedback.
• Familiarity with Educational and Health Care Plans (EHCP) processes.
