Staff Nurse – Border Stroke & Palliative Care

About the role

This internal vacancy is for a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join the Border Stroke Unit and the Margaret Kerr Palliative Care Ward. The role offers 23 hours of weekly work across day, night and weekend shifts, supporting adult patients with stroke rehabilitation or end‑of‑life care.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver person‑centred nursing care on a 14‑bed stroke unit and an 8‑bed palliative ward.
• Manage complex clinical needs, symptom control and end‑of‑life support.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless patient journeys.
• Adapt quickly to a busy, unpredictable workload and changing patient acuity.
• Participate in training and continuous professional development.

Required profile

• Registered General Nurse (RGN) with adult experience.
• Interest or experience in stroke rehabilitation or palliative care.
• Current NHS Scotland staff member.
• Eligibility to work in the United Kingdom.
• Willingness to work flexible shifts, including nights and weekends.

Required skills

• Clinical nursing competence in acute and rehabilitative settings.
• Knowledge of stroke pathways and thrombectomy post‑procedure care.
• Expertise in symptom management and end‑of‑life care.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
