Staff Software Engineer, AI Reliability Engineering

About the role

Claude has your back, and the AI Reliability Engineering (AIRE) team makes sure it stays reliable for everyone who depends on it. AIRE partners with teams across Anthropic to improve reliability across critical serving paths—from the SDK through our network, API layers, serving infrastructure, and accelerators. We work in the trenches alongside partner teams to build more robust and resilient systems.

Key responsibilities

• Develop Service Level Objectives for large language model serving systems, balancing availability, latency, and development velocity.
• Design and implement monitoring and observability across the token path.
• Assist in building high‑availability serving infrastructure across multiple regions and cloud providers.
• Lead incident response for critical AI services, ensuring rapid recovery and systematic improvements.
• Support the reliability of safeguard model serving, crucial for site reliability and safety commitments.

Required profile

• Strong background in distributed systems, infrastructure, or reliability engineering.
• Curious and brave, able to jump into unfamiliar systems during incidents.
• Holistic view of system composition and seam identification.
• Ability to build lasting relationships across teams and act as a trusted teammate.
• Ownership mindset for outcomes, even for systems you don’t own.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Diverse experience across product stacks, large‑scale databases, and distributed systems.

Required skills

• Experience operating large‑scale model serving infrastructure (e.g., >1000 GPUs).
• Familiarity with ML hardware accelerators such as GPUs, TPUs, and Trainium.
• Knowledge of ML‑specific networking optimizations like RDMA and InfiniBand.
• Proficiency with AI‑specific observability tools and frameworks.
• Experience with chaos engineering and systematic resilience testing.
