Structural Design Engineer – Naval Shipbuilding

About the role

We are looking for a Structural Design Engineer to join BAE Systems’ Design Services team at Portsmouth Naval Base. You will contribute to the design of naval vessels, from aircraft carriers to submarines, using both 2‑D and 3‑D CAD tools while supporting production and customer requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Design structural and outfit arrangements using 2‑D and 3‑D CAD packages (Autodesk, Siemens NX).
• Prepare detailed production packages and liaise with manufacturing teams.
• Conduct ship visits to verify configuration, material condition and layout.
• Collaborate with customers to develop and refine design specifications.
• Support apprentices and junior engineers through mentoring and training sessions.

Required profile

• Proven experience designing with 2‑D and 3‑D CAD tools (Autodesk, Siemens NX).
• Experience working with manufacturing drawings and a structural/fabrication environment.
• Minimum NVQ Level 3 or equivalent; HND/HNC desirable.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
