Student Planner Placement – Planning Department

About the role

Northumberland County Council is offering a year‑long student placement within its busy planning department for the 2026/27 academic year. The role is designed for students taking a gap year or recent graduates who wish to gain practical experience in planning policy, urban design, enforcement and built heritage.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with research, data analysis and stakeholder engagement across planning policy, urban design and enforcement projects.
• Support the preparation of the Northumberland Local Plan, supplementary plans and neighbourhood plans.
• Contribute to the development of design guidance, illustrations and evidence for housing design standards.
• Provide planning policy and design advice on planning applications to aid the development management process.
• Collaborate with senior planners and external partners to deliver high‑quality, sustainable development outcomes.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a relevant degree programme or a recent graduate seeking a year of practical experience.
• Strong interest in urban planning, policy development, design and heritage conservation.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Excellent communication and analytical skills.
