Suicide Bereavement Specialist

About the role

Pete's Dragons, an award‑winning charity, is expanding its postvention service across Devon. The Suicide Bereavement Specialist provides timely, community‑based support to individuals, families, groups and communities who have experienced a suicide loss. The role can be based in Barnstaple or Plymouth and offers 24‑32 hours per week on a part‑time or full‑time equivalent basis.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver a compassionate, needs‑led service to those bereaved by suicide, responding within 48 hours.
• Provide practical and emotional support through non‑clinical interventions that promote coping and resilience.
• Assess each case, determine appropriate next steps, and make referrals or sign‑post to other services.
• Coordinate safeguarding responses where required, ensuring safety and appropriate care.
• Produce area‑specific resource packs containing information on local support services.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with key agencies, first responders and community partners.

Required profile

• Willingness and ability to commute to the designated office and travel locally as needed.
• Experience working with bereaved individuals or in a community support setting.
• Good judgement and the ability to assess risk and coordinate safeguarding.
• Commitment to a proactive, compassionate approach.

• Excellent communication and listening skills.
• Ability to produce clear, concise written resources.
• Strong organisational and case‑management abilities.

What we offer

• Starting salary of £27,500 per annum (full‑time equivalent), paid pro‑rata.
