Survey Engineer

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Survey Engineer to provide specialist railway surveying expertise across a diverse portfolio of rail infrastructure projects. Working as an independent consultant you will plan, deliver and assure survey activities that support the design, maintenance and enhancement of the railway network.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and deliver topographical and rail infrastructure surveys.
• Establish, validate and maintain survey control networks.
• Manage GNSS survey control and coordinate transformation methodologies, including SnakeGrid.
• Extract, process and validate point‑cloud data and survey deliverables.
• Provide technical survey expertise to multidisciplinary project teams.
• Review survey specifications and ensure outputs meet technical requirements.
• Carry out quality assurance and verification of survey information.
• Support survey governance, standards development and best‑practice initiatives.
• Coordinate with third‑party survey providers and resolve technical issues.
• Identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement in survey methodology and technology.

Required profile

• Significant railway surveying experience, including leading track and rail infrastructure surveys.
• Strong understanding of modern topographical survey techniques.
• Experience establishing and managing GNSS control networks.
• Practical experience using SnakeGrid transformations.
• Experience processing and interpreting point‑cloud datasets.
• Ability to independently review and assure survey outputs.
• Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification.
• Experience working within rail standards and environments.
