Tax Accountant

About the role

Our client is seeking an experienced Tax Accountant to manage a portfolio of personal tax clients, including individuals, landlords and sole traders, within a supportive accountancy practice based in Rayleigh.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of personal tax clients (individuals, landlords, sole traders).
• Prepare and review UK Self Assessment tax returns.
• Prepare sole trader accounts.
• Liaise directly with clients to gather information, answer queries and finalise returns.
• Correspond with HMRC where required.
• Ensure all compliance deadlines are met.
• Review and guide junior staff work.
• Support day‑to‑day personal tax compliance matters.
• Identify basic tax planning opportunities within a compliance‑focused role.

Required profile

• Experience preparing UK Self Assessment tax returns in an accountancy practice.
• Experience preparing sole trader accounts.
• Ability to manage a client portfolio independently.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
• Confident communicator with a professional client approach.
• Experience supporting or reviewing junior staff work.
• Familiarity with tax and accounts software such as Iris, Xero or Sage.
• Experience handling regular client communication within a practice environment.
