Teaching Assistant – Special Educational Needs (SEND)

About the role

We are looking for a compassionate Teaching Assistant to join the SEND unit of a well‑established primary school in Haywards Heath. The role focuses on supporting pupils with significant social communication differences, such as autism, and offers the chance to make a real impact on their learning journey.

Key responsibilities

• Provide tailored one‑to‑one and group support to pupils under the guidance of the SEN coordinator and classroom teachers.
• Assist in developing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for each student.
• Facilitate social‑skills activities in both structured and naturalistic settings.
• Use a range of communication aids and strategies to enhance interaction and learning.
• Monitor emotional and behavioural needs, offering immediate assistance and feedback.
• Collaborate with teachers, parents, and external professionals to promote student wellbeing.
• Maintain accurate records of progress and incidents, reporting as required.

Required profile

• Experience working with children, preferably in an SEN environment.
• Understanding of autism and other social communication differences.
• Patience, resilience and a compassionate approach.
• Strong communication skills and ability to use communication aids.
• Team‑player who can follow guidance from an SEN coordinator.
• Relevant education or SEN qualifications are a plus.
