Teaching Assistant – Support High‑Needs Children in Primary School

About the role

We are looking for a caring Teaching Assistant to work in Brent Primary School’s mainstream classroom, providing one‑to‑one support for children with high‑needs, particularly those with autism. The role focuses on early phonics, communication and pre‑reading development to build strong literacy foundations.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver targeted phonics and early literacy activities, using songs, rhymes and play‑based tasks.
• Provide personal care, support transitions, sensory needs and daily routines for assigned pupils.
• Adapt learning materials to meet individual communication, sensory and developmental requirements.
• Collaborate with the EYFS Lead and other assistants to ensure a consistent, structured learning environment.

Required profile

• Patient, nurturing and resilient with experience supporting children with autism (ASD) in EYFS or SEND settings.
• Good understanding of early phonics, phonemic awareness and early reading development.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a close‑knit team and follow senior staff guidance.

Required skills

• Knowledge of visual support systems such as PECS.
• Familiarity with communication strategies like Makaton or Attention Autism.
