Technical Manager – Fluid Dynamics (Defence)

About the role

The company is a leading defence development, engineering and manufacturing organisation seeking a Technical Manager to lead its Structural and Fluid Dynamics capability. Based in Bristol with hybrid working, you will join the senior management team and shape the technical direction for current and future projects.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership on structural and fluid dynamics projects, stepping in hands‑on when required.
• Ensure the team has the right people, tools and processes to meet project demands.
• Manage external suppliers, including tendering, quality audits and tool procurement.
• Develop and maintain business cases for new software or upgrades and lead their implementation.
• Oversee resource planning, line management and continuous improvement within the domain.
• Act as the focal point for technical excellence, supporting customer interactions and test activities.

Required profile

• Significant industrial experience in structural or fluid dynamics engineering, preferably within the defence sector.
• Proven ability to balance hands‑on technical work with leadership and strategic planning.
• Experience managing teams, external suppliers and capability development.
• Strong understanding of loads, flight physics, aero‑elasticity, vibration and CFD analysis.
• Excellent communication skills to liaise with customers and senior stakeholders.
