Technician – Cell and Gene Therapy Research

About the role

As a member of the Scale Enabling Technology (SET) team at Guy’s Hospital, you will support cell and gene therapy projects by performing laboratory work that underpins process optimisation and analytical development. The role offers hands‑on experience with bioprocess automation and a wide range of analytical techniques in a cutting‑edge research environment.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare media, buffers and reagents; manage stock and maintain aseptic conditions.
• Culture diverse cell types using flasks, 2D/3D bioreactors and downstream purification systems.
• Execute routine assays such as flow cytometry, qPCR, ddPCR, ELISA, MADLS, mass photometry, LC‑MS, and cell‑based viral transduction assays.
• Support senior scientists and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
• Ensure laboratory equipment is calibrated, safe and ready for use, and record data in the electronic laboratory notebook (eLN).
• Comply with health‑and‑safety policies and quality‑management procedures.

Required profile

• Demonstrable experience in virology, biochemistry, cell biology or a related life‑science discipline.
• Background in research, process development or manufacturing of biologics, viral vectors or cell therapies.
• Proven ability to analyse and interpret experimental data to inform scientific decisions.
• Experience maintaining accurate laboratory records and documentation.

Required skills

• Flow cytometry, qPCR, ddPCR, ELISA, MADLS, mass photometry, LC‑MS.
• Cell‑based assays including viral transduction.
• Use of data‑analysis software such as GraphPad Prism and FlowJo.
• Mammalian cell culture, downstream purification, assay automation (advantageous).
• Laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration (advantageous).
• Aseptic technique and electronic laboratory notebook (eLN) data capture.
