Temporary Works Design Lead

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Temporary Works Design Lead to manage and grow the technical department of a leading scaffold and temporary works company in Bristol. The role combines hands‑on design work with team leadership, ensuring high‑quality temporary works solutions for construction, civil engineering and rail projects.

Key responsibilities

• Implement, review and update the temporary works management process.
• Lead technical delivery of projects, ensuring design briefs and programmes are received and adhered to.
• Conduct design risk assessments and produce Designers Risk Assessments.
• Investigate alternative designs in collaboration with site teams.
• Deliver temporary works designs on time and within budget, performing contract‑specified design checks.
• Support value engineering, innovate robust solutions and provide technical input for pre‑tender activities.
• Write processes and checklists to improve quality control and repeatability.
• Act as the primary technical contact for customers and internal queries.
• Manage the existing design team and recruit additional staff as the business expands.

Required profile

• Proven experience in temporary works design or structural engineering.
• BEng/MEng (or equivalent) in Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering.
• Hands‑on design mindset with the ability to lead and develop a technical team.
• Motivated, ambitious and able to work autonomously.

Required skills

• AutoCAD (advanced proficiency).
• Temporary works design expertise.
