Trading Underwriter

About the role

We are seeking a Trading Underwriter to join a well‑established insurer in Bristol. The role involves managing a portfolio of business partner accounts, underwriting scheme and standalone risks, and balancing commercial opportunity with sound risk management. You will work hybrid, two days a week in the office, supporting profitable growth and contributing to underwriting strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Underwrite and manage scheme and standalone policies, including renewals, MTAs and new business.
• Analyse data, declarations and portfolio performance to assess profitability and risk exposure.
• Use underwriting and performance data to identify opportunities for profitable growth.
• Negotiate rates, premiums, exclusions and terms within delegated authority.
• Develop and maintain relationships with key accounts, insurers and business partners.
• Produce renewal and performance packs, reviews and supporting documentation.
• Act as a technical referral point for complex queries and ensure compliance with governance frameworks.
• Support junior colleagues through knowledge sharing and contribute to process improvement projects.

Required profile

• Proven experience in underwriting within general or commercial insurance.
• Experience managing schemes, delegated authority arrangements or portfolios of business.
• Commercially minded with strong relationship‑building skills.
• Ability to balance technical underwriting decisions with commercial considerations.
