Train Controller

About the role

This permanent position places you at the heart of freight rail operations in the South region. As part of a newly created Service Delivery Centre, you will manage the live running of freight services, making real‑time decisions that keep trains moving safely and efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and control the real‑time movement of freight trains, maintaining situational awareness and responding to emerging issues.
• Implement service recovery actions during disruptions, adjusting plans and prioritising actions to minimise impact.
• Issue operational instructions to drivers, including departures, routing changes and regulated running.
• Coordinate closely with drivers, depots, planning, rostering and other operational teams to ensure seamless communication.
• Record decisions, communications and incidents accurately, ensuring compliance with standards and procedures.

Required profile

• Proven experience in train control or a comparable safety‑critical control room environment (aviation, emergency services, utilities, ports, etc.).
• Strong decision‑making ability under pressure with a focus on safety and efficiency.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with drivers and multiple internal stakeholders.
• Ability to work in a dynamic environment where processes and standards are still evolving.

Required skills

• Effective stakeholder coordination and communication.
