Train Planner – Freight Operations

About the role

Join a newly created regional Service Delivery Centre in Swindon, supporting freight train operations across the South region. You will shape the new planning function, influencing processes and standards from day one.

Key responsibilities

• Develop safe, compliant, and efficient operational plans for freight services across the South region.
• Construct workable train paths and schedules that balance customer needs, network capacity, and resource availability.
• Integrate engineering possessions, works, and network constraints to ensure realistic and compliant plans.
• Coordinate closely with Control, Rostering, depots, and operational teams to guarantee reliable service delivery.
• Review and validate plans for accuracy, robustness, and adherence to industry and business requirements.

Required profile

• Experience producing structured schedules, timetables, or route plans in a complex environment.
• Background in rail planning or a transferable scheduling‑intensive sector such as aviation, logistics, manufacturing, or transport.
• Ability to work with constraint‑based planning, engineering integration, and operational coordination.
• Understanding of safety, compliance, and industry standards relevant to freight rail operations.
