Trainee Data Scientist – Level 6 Apprenticeship

About the role

Join the Public Health, Protection and Wellbeing directorate of Stoke-on-Trent City Council as a Trainee Data Scientist. This fixed‑term, 36‑month apprenticeship will allow you to develop Level 6 Data Scientist competencies while supporting evidence‑based decisions that improve the health, wellbeing and safety of local residents.

Key responsibilities

• Lead or support data analysis, surveys and reports, presenting complex findings to diverse audiences.
• Assist in advancing statistical methods within the team and with external partners.
• Manage data pipelines from the authority and partner organisations.
• Conduct deep‑dive analyses on priority topics such as child development and domestic abuse.
• Develop reporting dashboards for services including Environmental Health, Trading Standards and NHS Health Checks.

Required profile

• Ability to understand and interpret statistics and work confidently with data.
• Self‑motivated, able to balance workload while completing apprenticeship assignments.
• Experience using data management or presentation tools such as Excel, Access or PowerBI.
• Capable of communicating data‑science concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
