University Assistant Professor in Polar Studies

About the role
The Department of Geography together with the Scott Polar Research Institute is seeking a University Assistant Professor in Polar Studies to join its faculty from 1 January 2027 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The successful candidate will develop and lead research on terrestrial and freshwater polar environments, their biota, and the social‑human dimensions of these systems, while contributing to undergraduate and Masters teaching.
Key responsibilities
- Develop an independent research programme on polar landscapes, ecosystems or human dimensions and secure external research funding.
- Publish high‑quality peer‑reviewed articles and present findings at international conferences.
- Teach a range of Geography and Polar Studies courses at undergraduate and Masters level.
- Supervise and mentor PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and undergraduate projects.
- Collaborate with existing faculty to enhance the Institute’s interdisciplinary activities.
Required profile
- PhD in Geography, Polar Studies or a closely related discipline.
- Outstanding academic record appropriate to the career stage.
- Demonstrated record of research publications and potential for research leadership.
- Evidence of ability to attract research funding.
- Enthusiasm and proven ability to teach at undergraduate and Masters level.
- International reputation or clear potential to develop one.

- Teaching and curriculum development.
- Supervision of graduate and postdoctoral researchers.
