VAT Manager / Assistant Manager

About the role

The practice is seeking a VAT Manager or Assistant Manager to join its advisory team in Scotland's Central Belt. You will work on both compliance and advisory projects for a wide range of clients, supporting senior partners and contributing to the growth of the VAT practice.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver VAT compliance and advisory services to diverse clients, handling ad‑hoc special assignments.
• Maintain the firm’s quality control procedures and professional standards.
• Identify and communicate risk, quality, and technical issues to the Partner or Associate Director.
• Manage a client portfolio, including onboarding, billing, recovery, and debt management.
• Act as the primary point of contact for clients, responding promptly to requests and keeping them informed of progress.
• Ensure projects are delivered within agreed budgets and timelines, escalating overruns as needed.
• Liaise with HMRC and other external stakeholders.
• Support the development of junior staff through training, mentoring, and knowledge sharing.

Required profile

• Qualified accountant or tax professional with solid experience in UK VAT.
• Proven ability to manage client relationships and deliver projects independently.
• Strong commercial awareness and a proactive approach to identifying new business opportunities.
• Commitment to continuous professional development and progression within the firm.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of UK VAT legislation and HMRC processes.
• Experience with VAT compliance software and reporting tools.
• Excellent analytical and risk‑assessment capabilities.
