Virtual School Engagement Officer

About the role

Northumberland County Council is recruiting a Virtual School Engagement Officer to support children in care, care leavers and those with a social worker who have experienced disruption to their education. The post is based at the Virtual School in County Hall, Morpeth and will work closely with the Virtual School Headteacher and multi‑disciplinary team.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement policies and practices that improve attendance and educational engagement for cared‑for children.
• Work strategically with schools, local authorities and partners to promote inclusion and wellbeing.
• Provide advice, support and constructive challenge to schools where practice is inconsistent.
• Collaborate with children’s social care, carers and young people to ensure personalised learning pathways.
• Undertake line‑management duties for the Virtual School team.

Required profile

• Proven experience working with school leaders, children’s social care professionals, carers and young people.
• Background in education, social care or a related field with a strong understanding of barriers to educational achievement.
• Ability to build positive, productive relationships across multiple agencies.
• Commitment to improving outcomes for disadvantaged children and young people.
