Visiting Officer – Housing Support

About the role

The Visiting Officer works directly with residents, landlords and partner agencies to prevent homelessness and secure stable housing outcomes. This frontline position combines early‑intervention, mediation and practical problem‑solving to support vulnerable households across Southwark.

Key responsibilities

• Visit residents in their homes and communities to assess circumstances, identify risks and provide tailored housing advice.
• Respond rapidly to imminent homelessness threats, including eviction notices, exclusion from family or friends, and housing instability.
• Use mediation and negotiation to resolve disputes between tenants, landlords, families and support networks.
• Collaborate with landlords and agents to understand concerns, negotiate solutions and sustain tenancies wherever possible.
• Develop personalised housing plans outlining clear actions, support measures and sustainable pathways.
• Assist residents in maximising income and accessing financial assistance such as discretionary housing payments.
• Manage a varied and complex caseload, applying sound judgement to meet statutory responsibilities.

Required profile

• Experience working with housing, homelessness prevention or related social services.
• Strong knowledge of local housing legislation and statutory duties.
• Ability to build relationships with residents, landlords and multi‑agency partners.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills for conflict resolution.
• Proactive, resident‑focused approach with sound judgement and decision‑making ability.
