Weapons Systems Safety Manager

About the role

The position is a contractor role based in the Bristol area, supporting the delivery of safety assurance for complex weapons and missile systems. You will work closely with the Chief Engineer and multi‑disciplinary teams to ensure compliance with defence safety regulations and to manage safety case documentation throughout the contract period.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and update System Environmental and Safety Case Reports and associated Safety Management Plans on an annual basis.
• Provide pragmatic safety advice to the Chief Engineer for short‑term operational changes and draft risk transfer communications.
• Update safety cases for new system variants and support platform‑wide safety integration activities.
• Prepare safety submissions for storage and replenishment of defence munitions at approved sites.
• Chair and document Safety Environmental Panels and Hazard Log Working Groups, producing minutes and slide packs.
• Contribute safety and technical input to Defence Aviation Safety Operating Regulations and military accident investigations.
• Conduct regulatory impact assessments and manage stakeholder acceptance of non‑compliance waivers.

Required profile

• Proven experience running missile or complex weapons safety programmes and managing defence safety cases.
• Deep knowledge of safety requirements across maritime, air and land environments.
• Ability to translate complex operating risks into clear written communications for technical authorities.
• Strong stakeholder management skills across internal teams and industrial partners.

Required skills

• Experience with defence safety case documentation and formal safety review submissions.
• Familiarity with regulatory frameworks governing weapons systems safety.
