Web Developer, PHP/Laravel, Linux (Ubuntu) Sysadmin

About the role

This on‑site, full‑time position is based in Southend‑on‑Sea. You will join a small, growing development business delivering client websites, bespoke web applications and technical support. The role focuses on web development while also requiring a solid understanding of servers, databases and DNS.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain client websites and custom web applications using PHP, MySQL/MariaDB, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
• Build new features and fix bugs in existing Laravel or CodeIgniter projects.
• Design, write and optimise MySQL or MariaDB queries.
• Integrate third‑party APIs and support WordPress sites when required.
• Deploy code and database changes to development and production environments.
• Diagnose and resolve website, email, DNS, SSL and hosting issues.
• Perform basic Linux (Ubuntu) and web‑server administration.
• Communicate progress and technical solutions clearly to clients and non‑technical colleagues.

Required profile

• Solid foundation in web development with practical experience in PHP and relational databases.
• Ability to work independently, manage your own workload and deliver quality code.
• Good understanding of how websites, servers and DNS interact.
• Willingness to learn new technologies and improve existing systems.
