Where It Begins Trainee Placement

About the role

This 8‑week paid placement gives you a hands‑on introduction to BBC Radio 1Xtra, the national station championing Black British music and culture. You will work full‑time at London Broadcasting House, with an initial training trip to Birmingham, and receive a pro‑rated salary plus London weighting.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with multiple production and editorial teams across the station.
• Participate in creative meetings and support the preparation of live shows.
• Assist during live broadcasts, helping with scheduling, content preparation and audience interaction.
• Attend a mentor‑led development session each week.
• Experience a 360‑degree view of a national broadcaster’s operations.

Required profile

• Passionate about music, Black British culture and contemporary media trends.
• Enthusiastic listener of BBC Radio 1Xtra and creator of podcasts, playlists or radio‑style content.
• Positive, proactive attitude with a willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings or weekends.
• Open‑minded and comfortable working in a diverse, inclusive environment.
