Workshop Machinist – Hydraulic Repairs & Lathes

About the role

We are seeking a skilled Workshop Machinist to join a leading engineering client in Braintree. The role focuses on diagnosing, repairing and refurbishing hydraulic components while operating manual lathes in a busy workshop environment.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose faults and carry out repairs on hydraulic rams and related components.
• Strip down, inspect, refurbish and re‑assemble hydraulic cylinders.
• Test completed rams to confirm safe, efficient and reliable operation.
• Operate manual lathes (e.g., Colchester) for part machining.
• Liaise with customers, provide quotes and communicate job progress.
• Manage stock levels, order parts and ensure cost‑effective procurement.
• Organise outsourced work and maintain accurate records.
• Maintain a clean, tidy and organised workshop.
• Follow all Health & Safety procedures and report any hazards.

Required profile

• Proven ability to diagnose mechanical faults and perform repairs.
• Experience stripping, inspecting and re‑assembling hydraulic components.
• Capability to test components for safe and reliable operation.
• Good understanding of workshop practices, preferably with hydraulic knowledge.
• Strong attention to detail, problem‑solving and independent work management.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills.

What we offer

• Competitive salary £32,000 – £38,000 per year (dependent on experience).
• Permanent contract with regular Monday‑Friday hours (8:00 am – 5:30 pm).
