360 Operator – Machine Driver for Groundworks & Drainage

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Machine Driver to join our groundwork and drainage teams on major infrastructure and civil engineering projects. The role involves operating 360° excavators above and below 10 tonnes in live‑service environments, delivering safe and productive excavation, lifting and groundworks work.

Key responsibilities

• Operate 360° excavators (above and below 10 t) for groundwork, drainage and infrastructure activities.
• Excavate for deep drainage, foundations, crane bases, utilities, roads, ducting and related packages.
• Work safely around live services using safe digging practices and permit‑to‑dig systems.
• Perform lifting operations with excavators as cranes, following lifting plans and site requirements.
• Lift and position pipes, manholes, trench boxes, concrete units, ducting and other materials safely.
• Support drainage gangs, groundwork teams and supervisors to ensure safe, efficient project delivery.
• Excavate, grade, trim, backfill and maintain levels to drawings, laser levels and site specifications.
• Carry out traditional groundworks such as foundations, slabs, kerbing, roads and external works.
• Maintain safe working areas around excavations and plant.
• Conduct daily pre‑start inspections, safety checks and basic machine maintenance.
• Keep plant clean, fuelled, greased and in good working condition.

Required profile

• CPCS / NPORS (CSCS‑affiliated) 360 Excavator Above & Below 10 t certification.
• CPCS / NPORS Excavator‑as‑Crane / Lifting Operations certification.
• 5+ years’ experience operating excavators on drainage, groundwork and infrastructure projects.
• Proven experience working around live services and within permit‑controlled excavation environments.
• Strong understanding of safe lifting operations and excavation safety.
• Safety‑critical medical clearance (site specific).
• Good communication skills and ability to work effectively within site teams.
• Reliable, punctual and safety‑conscious.
• Right to work in the UK.
