Costs Lawyer – Legal Aid Specialist

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Costs Lawyer to join a respected specialist law firm in London. You will work on a varied caseload of legal aid and private costs matters, primarily within family law, and play a key part in ensuring accurate billing and cost recovery.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and submit fixed‑fee, exceptional, and high‑cost legal aid bills.
• Manage CCMS billing and ensure compliance with Legal Aid Agency requirements.
• Draft interim, final, and inter partes bills of costs.
• Negotiate costs and maximise cost recovery for clients.
• Liaise with fee earners, counsel, clients and third parties.
• Provide technical guidance and best‑practice support to colleagues.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Costs Lawyer.
• Strong knowledge of family legal aid costs.
• Proficiency with CCMS and CostsMaster systems.
• Thorough understanding of LAA guidance and Civil Procedure Rules relating to costs.
• Experience handling high‑cost cases and inter partes bills.
• Excellent communication, organisational and negotiation abilities.
