Director of Software Engineering (Hybrid, London)

About the role

Capital One UK is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead a high‑performing team of over 50 engineers. This senior leader will partner with business stakeholders, drive technical excellence, and help deliver innovative lending solutions in a regulated environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of 50+ software engineers and architects operating at scale within a complex, regulated setting.
• Collaborate with Product and Design teams to shape the roadmap for critical business capabilities.
• Elevate talent, set clear development agendas, and actively manage performance across the team.
• Ensure rapid, precise delivery across multiple outcome‑focused teams.
• Liaise with enterprise stakeholders, primarily based in the US, to align on domain expertise and strategic goals.
• Oversee a mix of internal and third‑party engineers, providing effective oversight and governance.
• Communicate organisational purpose, commitments, and opportunities to engage the team with customer and business outcomes.
• Stay current with regulatory changes and emerging technologies relevant to the domain.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading large engineering groups (50+ members) in a senior capacity.
• Strong ability to partner with business leaders and translate outcomes into technical solutions.
• Excellent communication skills, comfortable at both executive and deep technical levels.
• Demonstrated capability to navigate ambiguity and provide clear direction.
• Background in regulated financial services or similar highly‑controlled environments.
• Track record of talent development, performance management, and fostering high‑performing cultures.
• Experience managing cross‑geographical stakeholders, especially US‑based partners.
