Government Legal Department Lawyer (Grade 7)

About the role

The Government Legal Department (GLD) provides legal advice to a wide range of UK government departments. As a Grade 7 qualified lawyer you will join a team that influences policy, legislation and high‑profile litigation across the public sector.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice to ministers, senior officials and departmental clients on complex issues.
• Draft, review and interpret legislation, regulations and policy documents.
• Manage a caseload that may include litigation, advisory, commercial and employment matters.
• Collaborate with other legal professionals across government to develop coherent legal strategies.
• Ensure advice is risk‑based, balanced and aligned with government objectives.

Required profile

• A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Ability to think strategically and creatively about legal problems.
• Strong analytical judgement and the confidence to give persuasive advice.
• Open‑minded, impartial and able to work collaboratively under pressure.

Required skills

• Legal research and analysis.
• Drafting of legislation, regulations and policy documents.
• Case management across litigation, advisory, commercial and employment law.
