Government Legal Department Qualified Lawyer (Grade 7)

About the role

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is seeking qualified lawyers (Grade 7) to join its teams across the UK. You will work alongside ministers, senior officials and other legal professionals, providing high‑profile advice on a wide range of public‑sector matters.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and guidance to government departments on legislation, policy and regulatory issues.
• Draft, review and negotiate contracts, statutory instruments and other legal documents.
• Represent the government in litigation and dispute resolution matters.
• Collaborate with cross‑departmental teams to develop risk‑based solutions.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of UK, EU and international law relevant to public service.

Required profile

• A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Strong analytical and judgment skills with the ability to provide balanced, risk‑aware advice.
• Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex legal issues clearly.
• Open‑minded, impartial and able to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
• Willingness to obtain DV security clearance where required (London posts).
