Head of Tax

About the role

Aston University is seeking an experienced Head of Tax to lead its tax function and support the Aston 2030 Strategy. Reporting to the Executive Director of Finance, you will oversee VAT, corporation tax, employment tax and international tax matters and act as the primary liaison with HMRC and external advisors.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the university’s tax strategy aligned with long‑term ambitions.
• Provide expert advice on tax risk, compliance and opportunities across the organisation.
• Ensure compliance with VAT, corporation tax, employment tax and international tax obligations while promoting best practice and effective controls.
• Support major UK and international projects with strategic tax advice from planning through delivery.
• Lead relationships with HMRC and other tax authorities as the university’s principal tax contact.
• Build tax awareness and strong governance, helping colleagues manage tax considerations effectively.
• Lead, develop and inspire the tax team to deliver high‑performance outcomes.

Required profile

• Qualified tax professional (CTA preferred) or equivalent experience.
• Proven track record of providing tax advice in a large, complex organisation or professional practice.
• Extensive experience in VAT and indirect taxation.
• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Senior leadership experience with the ability to influence across the university.
