Lawyer for Government Legal Department

About the role

The Government Legal Department (GLD) provides legal services to a wide range of UK government departments. As a qualified lawyer (Grade 7) you will join a team that advises ministers, senior officials and civil servants on complex legal matters across a variety of policy areas.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality legal advice to departmental clients on legislation, regulation, litigation and commercial issues.
• Draft, review and negotiate legal documents, including contracts, policy statements and statutory instruments.
• Represent the department in court proceedings and tribunals where required.
• Collaborate with other legal professionals across government to ensure consistent, risk‑aware guidance.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of relevant UK and EU law and contribute to policy development.

Required profile

• A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive.
• Strong analytical judgement and the ability to provide balanced, risk‑based advice.
• Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex legal issues clearly.
• Open‑minded, impartial and able to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
• For London‑based posts, the ability to obtain DV security clearance if required.
