Media Relations Officer

About the role
The Media Relations Officer will implement the Communications Team strategy, delivering external campaigns that showcase Heriot‑Watt University’s research, education and partnership achievements. Acting as the primary contact for journalists and staff, the role supports the university’s reputation across local, national and international media.
Key responsibilities
- Manage relationships with media outlets and external stakeholders to proactively promote the university and safeguard its reputation.
- Develop and disseminate content that maximises reach, influence and engagement for strategically important stories.
- Collaborate with the Corporate Communications Manager and the wider communications team to plan and promote research, education and business activities.
- Identify and pitch stories on the university’s strategic priorities in partnership with academics and professional services staff.
- Respond to journalist enquiries and provide communications advice to university staff.
Required profile
- Demonstrated experience in media relations and external communications.
- Ability to work collaboratively with academic and professional services teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

- Grade 6 salary range £31,236 – £36,636 per annum.
